Hi - I’m Robert, the founder of Skye Surface Design, creating hand crafted decorative finishes and bespoke textured artwork from my studio on the Isle of Skye.
My journey began as a traditional plasterer and has evolved over the past fifteen years into bespoke, contemporary plastercraft motivated by a fascination with natural materials; how they feel, how they react with light and how they can transform the atmosphere of a space.
I work with authentic materials including Venetian plaster, lime and clay in addition to microcement and traditional plasterwork.
Skye Surface Design was born from a love of natural materials, thoughtful design and the quiet beauty found within the landscapes of the Isle of Skye
Surrounded by rugged coastlines, ancient stone, changing skies and earthy colours I find constant inspiration in the natural world around me. My work combines traditional craftsmanship with a contemporary approach, creating decorative surfaces and artwork that feels tactile, timeless and real.

Where Ideas Begin
Many of my samples, experiments and artwork pieces begin their life in an old byre beside my home on the North End of Skye. with its weathered walls, moss covered stone, grass growing through the windows and years of history within its structure it is far from a traditional design studio. But it is a place that feels connected to the way I work. A place where colours are mixed, textures are explored and new ideas are created. The imperfect beauty of the building reflects the same qualities i look for in my work; authenticity, character and connection to the natural world.
